About

I have a column in Dramatics, a magazine that goes to God knows how many theater-mad high school kids, but there isn’t enough room there to cover everything I want to comment on. I’ve started this blog to discuss the stuff I don’t have room to discuss there. I see and read a lot. And I write a lot (plays, books, articles). And I like to discuss what I’ve seen, read and written and share ideas, enthusiasms and the odd complaint with those who might be interested. And I’ll sometimes plug things that I’m doing. Or things friends are doing. Or things that I think are worth your attention even if I have no connection with them. I’m going to keep this simple. No animations, a minimum of links. I enjoy rational discussion.

  1. Dear Jeffrey Sweet,

I am trying to track down the source of a quote attributed to you that I would like to reference in my upcoming book. I have googled it every way I can think of but so far have not been able to determine where it originally came from. I am hoping that you will remember. The quote I have in my notes is:

“The members of the Chorus (in a traditional musical) represent a community that shares words. This community sings lyrics in unison because it shares values.”

I very much appreciate any help you can provide.

    Best,

    David Armstrong.

It’s in my chapter on writing musicals in “The Dramatist’s Toolkit.” What’s your book about?

        Jeffrey,

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! That is what I thought, but I was not able to locate it.

My book is a history of the Broadway musical based on a course that I teach at the University of Washington School of Drama. The book will be titled: Broadway Nation — How Immigrant, Jewish, Queer & Black Artists Invented The Broadway Musical.

Your quote will be part of a section on the major themes of Broadway musicals, in this case: Community.

        Thanks again!

        David Armstrong
